In the Midwest of the USA, three sex-crazed teenage boys receive an invitation from a woman online who wants to hook up with them. When the three friends arrive, they soon realise their promise of sex is a trap and soon they must escape from the deranged leader of a Christian Fundamentalist cult.
The teenager Jarod invites his best friends Travis and Billy-Ray to have a foursome with a thirty-eight year-old woman. While driving to meet the woman, Travis hit a car parked on the road. When they meet the woman, she gives spiked beer to them and they pass out. When the three friends wake up, they find that they are trapped in the fundamentalist Five Points Trinity Church of the infamous Pastor Abin Cooper and that they will be killed. Meanwhile the church is under siege by ATF agents led by Agent Joseph Keenan that have been ordered to destroy the terrorist cell. Will the teenagers be saved by the agents of the law enforcement agency?
I first saw the smooth talking dude played by Michael Parks in Then Came Bronson when I was a teenager, and kind of lost track of him. I almost didn't recognize him in this film, he so embodied his character as the paternal leader of a religious cult. His acting is so natural, and his southern accent flawless. Michael Parks can ACT. Why hasn't Hollywood recognized this talent before now? I don't want to neglect John Goodman in this film. No matter the role, John Goodman is just a pleasure to watch. I'm never certain what he will do with his character, but have never been disappointed. This film is violent for sure, but it's about fanaticism and insanity, so it's predictable that violence begets violence in this story. I like the fact that the good guys and the bad guys are all mixed up in this movie, and those most committed to their beliefs are the most terrifying. Great acting all around. This film moved quickly.
I must admit that I did not like Mr. Smith's previous movies but this one I do. It has some excellent performances (notably Michael Parks and John Goodman, although the kids are very good too), an convincing story and a pretty funny ending. However, it is obvious that this is not a billion dollar movie, and therefore not bound for any rewards (except from the critics, perhaps), but it's good. America needs a satire. From our point of view, this side of the ocean, America is its worst enemy and this story shows it from the "religious" angle. Of course, there are crazy religious bastards everywhere, but America usually hunts them down around the world, instead of looking closely in their own backyard. So, the movie is simply good but not more than that. Well done and I recommend it. It's one of those movies that can say a lot with little money spent, providing there are professionals behind it. I could only imagine what could have been done with this backed up with big budget and major stars. Nevertheless, there's still a lot of room for enthusiasts like Mr. Smith and that's worth the appreciation.
Red State is as profane and anti-establishment as any of his other films, but the stakes are infinitely higher this time: This Kevin Smith movie has an astonishing body count.
Although it was initially suspected that it would be a slasher film, it is actually more like an action thriller. The horror is derived from real life hatred and the violence that people are capable of committing. Also unlike most slasher films, all violence and death in Red State is done with firearms. The movie however does feature numerous horror genre tropes where comparisons can be made between it and The Devil's Rejects and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It is not based on an actual story but is inspired but various real life events. The villain is a composite of Fred Phelps, Jim Jones and other leaders of religious cults. The events of the story are also quite similar to the Branch Davidian tragedy in Waco, Texas. During the shootout with the ATF and Five Points Church, the congregation's children are hidden in the attic. Later the teenage church member Cheyenne tells them to escape out the back and they are not seen in the film again. During many of Kevin Smith's Q&A appearances for the film he has said that if you listen to the background audio there is the sound of children screaming in the distance soon after the scene when Cheyenne and Jared are killed. Smith said he intentionally chose not to reveal the exact fate of the children. Kevin Smith's first drafted ending for Red State was to have the climactic shootout at the church end when the true apocalypse begins: Trumpet blasts herald from the sky which turns blood red and is filled with angels, one of which impales Pastor Cooper with a flaming sword. Given the film's $5,000 special effects budget this ending was logistically impossible yet elements of it inspired the film's final ending. No. This movie is a stand alone story. It does not contain (ex: Jay and Silent Bob) any characters or overt references to previous Kevin Smith films.
